I hope you all didn't just fall over from shock. I just re-certed my first-aid so if you're now in cardiac arrest please call me and I'll activate EMS for you!!
Today is Valentine's day. Wikipedia (not the greatest source) states in it's romantic version of history that:
The Early Medieval acta of either Saint Valentine were expounded briefly in Legenda Aurea.[16] According to that version, St Valentine was persecuted as a Christian and interrogated by Roman Emperor Claudius II in person. Claudius was impressed by Valentine and had a discussion with him, attempting to get him to convert to Roman paganism in order to save his life. Valentine refused and tried to convert Claudius to Christianity instead. Because of this, he was executed. Before his execution, he is reported to have performed a miracle by healing the blind daughter of his jailer.
Since Legenda Aurea still provided no connections whatsoever with sentimental love, appropriate lore has been embroidered in modern times to portray Valentine as a priest who refused an unattested law attributed to Roman Emperor Claudius II, allegedly ordering that young men remain single. The Emperor supposedly did this to grow his army, believing that married men did not make for good soldiers. The priest Valentine, however, secretly performed marriage ceremonies for young men. When Claudius found out about this, he had Valentine arrested and thrown in jail.
There is an additional modern embellishment to The Golden Legend, provided by American Greetings to History.com, and widely repeated despite having no historical basis whatsoever. On the evening before Valentine was to be executed, he would have written the first "valentine" card himself, addressed to a young girl variously identified as his beloved,[17] as the jailer's daughter whom he had befriended and healed,[18] or both. It was a note that read "From your Valentine."[17]
Now, there are many factors that lead to my partial dislike for this holiday.
- Hubby's birthday is the day previous. Some people would see this as a cop out, but my brain can't handle all of the celebrations. It's hard enough for me to work up birthday ideas. As we know it's not fair for the man to do all the work.
- I'm not a fan of roses. They are now the North American symbol of this holiday. I've already seen my fair share of overpriced, browned, and wilting flowers of this nature. No thanks!!
- I love my Man EVERY DAY!!! Why not celebrate on a day where you can actually go out for dinner without a reservation. Like the 15th of February. Great day for dinner dates :)
Top three confided, there are other reasons I dislike this holiday. I'll spare you the details.
I just had the best one of my life today.
I just had the best one of my life today.
Alanis is singing to me right now!
I can't be mad at a holiday when the hubby went all out.
I came home and was NOT allowed in the front door until a blindfold had been securely attached to my face. Also it smelled fabulous! Someone had been working on their awesome cooking skills.
There were candles, and flowers and perfectly cooked asparagus. One also can't forget the butter mushrooms. Mmmmmmmmm!
I also got to have a sit down conversation with someone who I hadn't really talked to like that in awhile. What a perfect evening. All I had to do was help with the dishes. I love doing that because I have OCD issues regarding the loading of the dishwasher.
LOL
I have to go prepare for a principal review now. I think I'll get some more reading done. Way too much waking up in the night this morning. Every hour, on the hour for 4 hours is a bit redundant. Stupid brain.
Here's to your Valentine's, whichever way you like it. (or hate)
TTFN!
